Waking up in the quiet hours of the morning often brings thoughts that linger longer than usual. Around 3 a.m., a wave of reflection swept over me, focusing on the year ahead and the personal projects I wanted to pursue. Suddenly, a question surfaced: why am I living in Wales? What moments and memories led me here? This question opened a door to a journey through time, memory, and place—one deeply connected to my late mother, who passed away not long ago.
For about 20 years, I cared for her, and during that time, we shared countless visits to the beautiful spots of North Wales. She loved those moments, the calm and mystical beauty of the landscape. Inspired by those memories, I decided to revisit these places and capture their essence through photography. This project, which I have named Places We Stood, will also include short poems reflecting the spirit of each location.
The First Stop: Waterfalls in Dyserth
The waterfalls in Dyserth were one of her favourite places. Early one morning, I found myself there, camera in hand, ready to capture the mist and the sound of rushing water. As I sat quietly, lost in thought, a small robin redbreast appeared beside me. It chirped softly, a bird she adored. I smiled, though I don’t usually believe in signs or omens.

I took a photo of the bird, and when I looked back, it had vanished. Then I realized it was perched on my shoulder. I was stunned. Wild birds rarely come so close, and yet there it was. Even though I don’t buy into mystical explanations, that moment felt special—a quiet connection between past and present, memory and nature.
Capturing the Spirit of Talacre Beach
Another place that holds deep meaning is Pensarn Beach. The wide sands and the endless horizon always brought a sense of peace. Last night, inspired by the project, I wrote a poem to accompany the photographs I plan to take there. The poem tries to capture the feeling of standing on the shore, the wind carrying whispers of the past.
"A passing stranger says hello, the faint sounds of Bingo calls
a cup of tea, fish and chips, gluten free.
this place is mine now you're gone
the passing stranger now walks by
the place has changed without you mum."

This blend of image and words will be a way to honour the moments we shared and the beauty she saw in these places. The project is not just about photography; it’s about preserving memories and emotions tied to the landscape.
Why This Project Matters
Places We Stood is more than a collection of photos and poems. It is a personal journey through grief, love, and remembrance. Revisiting these locations allows me to reconnect with my mother’s spirit and the life we shared. It also offers a chance to slow down and appreciate the quiet beauty of North Wales, a region often overlooked but rich with stories.
This project can inspire others to explore their own connections to place and memory. Whether it’s a favourite park, a childhood street, or a natural landmark, these spaces hold pieces of who we are. Taking time to revisit and reflect can bring comfort and clarity.
